I grew up with dinner table conversations about economics and investing.
I bought my first bond in grade 5 and understood my parents’ stress of paying high interest rates on their mortgage while I earned high interest rates on my bonds.
For decades, investing and personal finance was a hobby while I worked as a university professor in a different field of study.
As a professor, I honed my ability to translate complex concepts in ways that resonate with students.
Then I turned my personal finance hobby into a career as an investment portfolio manager and have been helping people since 2008 make appropriate decisions about their money.

I have the Chartered Investment Manager (CIM) and Personal Financial Planner (PFP) designations and I’ve been recognized as a Fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute.
Before this, I earned a PhD from the University of Waterloo in science and technology.
My first job was a professor at the National University of Singapore and then the BC Institute of Technology.
I've also got a commercial pilot’s licence and rescue scuba diving certification, which are more than hobbies - they helped me become a shortlisted astronaut candidate, but never mind that.
Sitting as a Director on the Boards of foundations, charities, and Crown Corporations enriches my life immeasurably. I'm an active member of the Institute of Corporate Directors and have completed the Director Education Program for the ICD.D designation.
